Schöneberg was known as the “Jewish Switzerland” after many upper middle-class Jews moved to the neighborhood around the turn of the 20th century. This was the neighborhood of scientists (Einstein), artists (Billy Wilder, the Comedian Harmonists), poets and journalists (Gertrud Kolmar, Alfred Kerr) and rabbis (Naphtali Carlebach, Alexander Altmann, Leo Baeck, Naphtali Herz Tur-Sinai). The tour will address various aspects of Jewish life in Schöneberg. However, its main goal is to visit the “Places of Remembrance”1 – a unique “art in public space” memorial that was installed in Schöneberg in 1993.
The “Places of Remembrance” exhibit consists of 80 street signs, mounted in ordinary locations throughout the Bavarian Quarter, that powerfully depict the discrimination against and persecution of the Jewish population. Most plaques consist of a pictorial symbol on one side, and a related legal text on the other side, which shows the systematic deprivation of rights during the Nazi period. Other signs commemorate particular historical events or acts of oppression.
In addition to visiting many of these street signs, the tour guide will talk about the cultural politics of memory in Germany. The Bavarian Quarter exhibit is considered a turning point in the politics of remembering. The tour organizer and guide, Iris Weiss, is renowned as the most highly qualified guide when it comes to Jewish life and history in Berlin.2 Ms. Weiss was born and raised in Munich.
