"JVA Tegel" is the largest penitentiary in Germany. About 1.650 detainees wait here for their release - if they don't have to serve a lifelong sentence.

The first buildings of the penitentiary were built in 1898. Most of the prison cells are in these old buildings. Inmates would prefer the new buildings, where some of them have the possibility to share flats with others. Most of the inmates work in companies inside the penitentiary, for example in the bakery, the printing press or the carpenter's workshop.
The detention is regulated by the German Law for Execution, the Strafvollzugsgesetz (StVollzG).
You need to bring a valid passport with you.
